Welcome to AusCommodore.com - The Australian Holden Commodore Forum

The Holden Commodore is an automobile manufactured since 1978 by the Holden subsidiary of General Motors (GM) in Australia, and, formerly, in New Zealand. In the mid-1970s, Holden established proposals to replace the long-serving Kingswood nameplate with a smaller, Opel-based model. Opel continued to provide the basis for future generations until the launch of the fourth generation in 2006, which deployed an Australian developed platform.

Initially introduced as a single sedan body style, the range expanded in 1979 to include a station wagon, with utility and long-wheelbase Statesman/Caprice derivatives following in 1990. The foundations for a revived Monaro coupé, four-door Crewman utility, and all-wheel drive Adventra crossover were provided by the now discontinued third generation architecture. From 1984, Holden began branding the flagship Commodore model as Holden Calais; the Holden Berlina and Holden Ute followed in 1988 and 2000, respectively. These were known previously as the Commodore Berlina and Commodore utility.

The Australian built Holden Commodore was first introduced by Holden in 1978. The Holden Commodore was originally introduced as a sedan body but in 1979 expanded to include a station wagon and ute body, and in 1990 The long wheelbase Statesman and Caprice models.

There have been 4 generations of Commodores, with each new introducing new designs and engineering. The First generation compromises of VB, VC, VH, VK, VL Commodores. The Second compromises VN, VP, VR ,VS. The Third compromises VT, VX, VY ,VZ And the Fourth includes the current VE Commodore series.

The Holden Commodore range contains a number of variants, each signifying a certain level of luxury The Most common being: Executive / Omega: The base model spec Commodore Berlina: slightly higher spec than the executive with few added features. Calais: The Luxury spec Commodore comprising luxurious interior and power equipment. Statesman/ Caprice: The long wheel base luxury variant, Higher spec than a Calais with the advantage of a long wheel base resulting in plenty of interior room for occupants and boot space. The Statesman/ Caprice has the most luxurious of the interiors and spec. Excluding the HSV range.

General Motors has regained the title of world's largest carmaker.

Toyota not only lost top spot for the first six months of this year but the disruption to its production from the earthquake and tsunami saw sales slip by 23 per cent and it trailed the Volkswagen Group into third place globally.

GM sales grew by 8.9 per cent to 4.536 million vehicles, ahead of 4.13 million VW products and 3.71 million vehicles wearing a Toyota bade, Lexus, Daihatsu or Hino badge. The strength of the yen is also affecting profits for the Japanese-based carmakers. Nissan this week announced it was aiming to reduce exports to try and limit the impact of the currency.

The Wall Street Journal noted Nissan plans to maintain a target of one million cars for the year but is aiming to sell 600,000 of them domestically. That contrasts with local sales of 460,000 for the year ended March 31 (the Japanese financial year).

Nissan has the highest export exposure of any of the Japanese carmakers, the WSJ reports, with 60 per cent of its Japanese-built products exported in the first six months of the year. Toyota shipped 56 per cent of its locally built vehicles overseas at the same time, while Honda and Suzuki export 37 per cent and 28 per cent of production respectively.

The news is better for the Germans where Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz had record first half results.

BMW led the pack with 18 per cent growth to 833,366 vehicles from Audi on 652,970 and Benz on 610,931. Beemers growth has been led by demand for the new 5 Series and X3 models, largely in Asia, a market where long wheelbase vehicles such as Audis A6L and A8L are popular prestige models.

The growing global acceptance of Hyundai and Kia products pushed the automotive group into fifth place in the sales charts. The South Korean duo sold 3.19 million vehicles in the first six months of 2011 to post a record growth rate of 15.9 per cent.

The popularity of models such as the Sonata, good price and quality competitiveness and sharp improvements in brand image contributed to better sales," a Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson said in a press release....

A controversial proposal by a GM-focused consumer website to replace the lion badge in Australia has been described as “absurd” by Holden.

Holden has labelled calls to replace the iconic Australian car maker’s badge with the Chevrolet bowtie as ‘‘absurd’’.

General Motors-focused consumer website GM Authority today published an editorial column suggesting the Holden badge needs to make way for a global brand such as Chevrolet to give the US car maker the same global leverage as rival Ford, which sells all its cars under the one name worldwide.

According to GM Authority chief executive Alex Luft, the Holden name is hurting GM’s ability to establish Chevrolet as a global brand.

‘‘So, while Holden may be working in Oceania for now, General Motors will find that keeping Holden around will put Chevrolet at a greater disadvantage compared to global brands such as Ford and Toyota as time goes on,’’ the editorial says.

‘‘As such, I would love to see Chevrolet (along with Buick and GMC) become completely global brands to the tunes of Ford, Toyota, BMW, and Lexus, among others.’’

A number of Chevrolet models are rebadged as Holdens for the Australian market, including the Captiva SUV and Cruze small car.

However, Holden spokeswoman Emily Perry has branded the name-change suggestion as ‘‘absurd’’.

‘‘Holden is, and is recognised by GM, as one of the, if not the, strongest brand in the GM stable,’’ Perry says.

‘‘Mike Simcoe [GM’s director of design] was in my office last week saying the same thing: as a brand it's better bought, better understood, more passionate than any other,’’ she says. ‘‘Holden is not going anywhere.’’

Luft lists several advantages to GM having a unified brand worldwide, including the ability to have global marketing campaigns and a unified brand image — ‘‘luxuries that General Motors currently can’t enjoy due to the brand and name dichotomy present in Chevrolet and Holden,’’ he says.

He even suggests how the change-over from Holden to Chevrolet may trickle into the Australian mindset.

‘‘Now, for those who think I’m absolutely crazy to even suggest the replacement of Holden — a brand that’s been around since 1856 and has been owned by GM since 1931 — let me be extra clear: I’m not recommending that the Holden brand be expunged tomorrow and be immediately replaced by Chevrolet,’’ he says.

‘‘Doing so may prove disastrous for both marquees (sic).’’

A good approach would be something similar to computing giant Cisco’s takeover of the Linksys brand, he says, where components were labelled ‘‘Linksys by Cisco’’ for several years before the Linksys name was dropped from the branding altogether.

He even suggests the Barina name used for Holden’s small car range sold in Australia could adopt the ‘‘Sonic’’ badge after US consumers struggled with the Aveo name used for the car in the North American market.
